Wrapped Human Body - Visual Work/ Statement

For this project I was tasked with selecting a theme and then creating some sort of visual image of a human body wrapped in some sort of material. The theme I chose was 'Surrealism'. I had an idea right away. I wanted to create a floating almost ghost like wrapped human body to show the surrealism of a floating figure. To add to the surreal and creepy aspect of my work, I want to an empty beach on a very dreary day to amplify the feeling of emptiness and surrealism. To create the image I wrapped my roommate in a bed sheet and had him stand on a bar stool in the water. I took a picture of that and then a picture from the same angle but without him or the stool in the picture. From there I went into photoshop and overplayed the images and erased the stool and played with the contest and grey scale to come up with my final product. Overall I believe that it turned out pretty good. It is visually pleasing to look at and for sure looks surrealistic and gives off a feeling of emptiness as well. The wrapped human body in the center of the image draws the viewers eye in right away because it looks out of place. Then the shore line points directly to the floating figure.

Dinner & A Movie - Visual Work/ Statement

For this project I was tasked with selecting a movie and from there creating a dinner scene or set up that would represent that movie using visual imagery and metaphors to connect to the theme or plot. The movie I chose was 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith'.  For those who have not seen this film, it is about treachery, revenge, and loss. Of all of the Star Wars films, this is probably the darkest. That being said, it is clear the feeling that is given off by my dinner set up. On the plate I set up two lemons. One of them is going rotten and the other in great shape. This is to represent Anakin Skywalker who falls
to the dark side  and the other one represents Obi-Wan Kenobi who is good but yet is still effected by the actions of Anakin in a very serious way. The lemon that is representing Anakin is bleeding and that blood is covering a majority of the plate and is also coming into contact with Obi-Wan's
lemon. This is to visually show that what Anakin does in the movie is so drastic that it can even pierce the purest of Jedi. I used red lighting and aspects of red because the color red is what represents the Sith & the dark side. I wanted the scene to make the viewer feel the anger and fear that is what the Sith evoke in individuals. I think that I did so pretty well. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and the way it turned out.

Touch Assignment

"In The Sand"
1600 x 1200 Pixels
Photography

“Look at your feet. You are standing in the sky. When we think of the sky, we tend to look up, but the sky actually begins at the earth. We walk through it, yell into it, rake leaves, wash the dog, and drive cars in it. We breathe it deep within us. With every breath, we inhale millions of molecules of sky, heat them briefly, and then exhale them back into the world.”
― Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses

This quote really inspired me to take this picture. Right as it said "look at your feet. You are standing in the sky." But then she explains that it begins on earth. Right away I pictured standing in the sand at the beach. I believe that the picture represents the quote very well too. The texture that can be seen in the sand as the sunlight reflects off the water really embraces the senses.

"Ocean At Sunset'
1600 x 1200 Pixels

“Don't think of night as the absence of day; think of it as a kind of freedom."
― Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses

I drew inspiration from this quote for a number of reasons. Reason number one being that there is an absence of day. The viewer can see that the sun is slowly disappearing and the landscape is turning to night. Another reason is the water. When she said "freedom", I was drawn to the water because the ocean is so open and freeing. Whenever I do go swim in the ocean I feel so relaxed and at peace. I also believed that the water really appealed to the senses and the viewer can almost feel the water and smell the image, the salt water in the air.
